Hands-on mental health awareness with Diageo Global Engineering

A practical mental health awareness session during Diageo Global Engineering's Health & Safety day, using Jenga and a Scrabble challenge to explore pressure, support and everyday self-care.

OrganisationDiageo Global Engineering

A mental health awareness session formed part of Diageo Global Engineering's Health & Safety day. Two simple group activities were used to explore what can happen as pressures build, how changes may become noticeable, and the everyday things that can help us look after our mental health.

Two activities, two ways into the subject

When the tower becomes less steady

The group began with a large Jenga tower. Before removing a block, participants shared a sign or symptom they might notice when someone is experiencing difficulties such as stress or depression, and considered the effect this can have on the individual and the people around them. As more blocks came out, the tower became increasingly unsteady. It offered a simple visual way to think about how pressures can accumulate while someone continues to keep going.

What helps us recharge

The session finished with Scrabble letters and a team challenge to find words for activities that support self-care. Rest. Walking. Music. Sleep. Family. Friends. Fresh air. The exercise brought together many different examples of what can help people stop for a moment and recharge.

When pressures build

The Jenga activity opened up a practical discussion about how life can become harder to manage gradually rather than all at once. Someone may keep going for quite some time, even as more pressures are added or things they rely on become harder to manage.

The session also considered the value of reaching out, talking to someone and accessing the right support before things become overwhelming.

Looking after mental health day to day

Looking after our mental health is not only about what we do when things become difficult. It is also about noticing what helps us stay well and making space for those things in everyday life.
